5/18/2007 Radio Interview - Danielle Broadhead - Australian Car Seat Safety

Please listen to this interview with Danielle Broadhead regarding the changes in the Australian laws that her foundation is backing. The Broadhead and Perry families encourage extended harnessing following the loss of their girls who were restrained in booster seats with adult belts - both girls died of internal injuries caused by the seatbelts in low speed crashes. A 5 point harness would have saved these children's lives.

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) -- It would be easy to assume -- based on photos from the scene -- that there were no survivors in the collision between a tractor trailer and minivan Saturday morning. Sheet metal and other debris were scattered across Interstate 85 near Groometown Rd. "I've been doing this 16 years. I've seen numerous wrecks and this, by far, is one of the worst ones," said Jerry Lee, the owner of the towing company that came to pick up the demolished minivan. But there were two survivors; Two-year-old twins Jayden and Jada Brooks lived, in part, because they were strapped into their car seats. The twins' mother, Hadiya Brooks, was killed, as were Hadiya's sister, Angelique Brooks Gibson, and mother, Diane Brooks. A state trooper said Diane Brooks made an illegal U-turn across southbound I-85 and failed to see an oncoming 18-wheeler. Reports show Brooks' minivan was going about 10 miles per hour when the truck plow into it at 65 mph, sending the minivan off the embankment and onto Business 85 below. "I really can't put into words, she was just ... she'd been my ... she'd been with me since the 10th grade of high school," said Darren Gibson, the husband of Angelique Brooks Gibson. Darren Gibson's heart is heavy, but he's thankful his sister-in-law's twins were strapped in properly. "Please, please put your kids in car seats," he pleaded. "Please, because without them, we wouldn't have two kids still alive." Coincidentally, Darren Gibson is himself the father of 3-year-old twins. The New York state Department of Transportation is sending members to North Carolina to investigate the crash and look at the car seats that saved the twins. A funeral for the three women killed in the accident is scheduled for Thursday in Gastonia.

This is the story of Isabelle Broadhead and Toni Perry who tragically lost their lives while riding in a Booster seat while secured with an adult seatbelt. The seatbelt did not fail as in the case of Kyle's accident, however, caused terminal internal injuries. Children are too young to be secured in a Booster seat with an adult seatbelt. A five point harness is the safest restraint for your chid. Please have patience when loading this video as the link is coming from Australia.

3/5/2008 Infant secured in car seat survives crash on I-15

CORONA - A 6-month-old infant escaped serious injury Wednesday because he was properly strapped into his car seat when his mother's car tumbled down an embankment after a collision with a pickup on northbound Interstate 15 in Corona, authorities said. After the car came to rest near the Ontario Avenue offramp, the infant Adrian Lomeli, of Oceanside, was upside down in his car seat. His mother, Christina Sotelo, extricated herself from her overturned 1999 Honda Civic, and pulled Adrian and his car seat from the vehicle, which was badly damaged. "The driver of the (Honda) just recently took a class on child restraint, restraining a child in a vehicle," said John Deyoe, a Corona firefighter and paramedic. "Taking the class may have saved this baby's life." CHP Officer Dennis Welch said the fact the infant was properly restrained may have prevented him from being ejected from the car. With Adrian by her side, Sotelo was taken by ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital. Welch said Sotelo had minor injuries. She was treated and released, the hospital reported. The accident occurred about 9:15 a.m. Santee resident Todd Ebbert, 47, the driver of the 2006 Ford F-150 pickup that was hit by Sotelo's Honda and his passenger, Shane Burke, 30, of El Cajon, were not hurt, according to Welch. The pickup received minor damage. Welch said Sotelo was driving northbound on I-15 about 55-60 mph when she came upon slower traffic going about 40 mph. Welch said Soteloswerved to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of her, hit the white pickup, then swerved left, hit the pickup again and then overcorrected, causing the car to cross all three northbound lanes and go over the side and down the embankment. 2/2/2007 The "Forgotten Child" – Ages 4 to 8 – at Risk of Death, Serious Injury in Crashes Because of "Safety Gap"

"Child restraint devices that address the "safety gap" were pioneered by researchers outside of the auto industry as far back as 1974. But instead of designing effective safety belts or child seats integrated into rear seats to accommodate children in the 4 to 8 age group, auto companies promoted aftermarket booster seats as the gap filler, despite their knowledge that the seats could be hazardous in collisions"
