Carol Carico tells the story of the day her son Michael was killed when the car he was a passenger in was hit by a someone running a red light. His seat belt failed to restrain him and the airbag was faulty.
My name is Carol and I am 61 years old. I am the mother of four children, grandmother of 14 and great grandmother of two.
I lost my oldest son Michael in 2002. Michael had just turned 39 a month to the day he was killed. He was killed the night before Thanksgiving. It was a holiday that Michael just loved. We would
spend the day with the family and then he would take his son camping for the weekend. This is a holiday we do not do anymore as it is just to painful not to have Michael there.
He was killed by a girl that ran a red light. He was a passenger in a car that, when they were hit, his seat belt did not hold him and he was slammed into the air bag. The owner of the car had received notice that the air bag needed to be recalled but he never had it done. So when the girl ran the red light the belt didn't hold. Michael died by blunt trauma to the chest.
Not only was the air bag at fault but also the girl that ran a red light. The girl was never charged with running a red light as she did not try to stop and there were no skid marks tell how fast she was going. The witnesses said she was traveling at least 55 in a 35 mile zone, but the judge here in Bradenton, Fla said he could not rule and the girl walks free today.
I am now in a coalition that is trying to get cameras installed at all lights so we can catch the ones that run these lights and they have to pay for taking a life.
Michael left behind two daughters, a son and wife. Also, two sisters, one brother, myself and his Dad. There is no pain of that of losing a child.
Michael lived right beside me and the pain of walking out my door and not seeing my son is the worst pain that I will ever have to deal with. My son was killed by a person that was in a hurry to get nowhere and a seat belt that was faulty. We must do all that we can to get the seat belts taken care of and also for the ones that run red lights to have to pay for taking a life. I pray that this can be done.
My prayers to all that have lost a child or family member in either of these ways.
Love and prayers.
Carol
